About the role
Reporting to the General Manager of Legal & Company Secretarial and based onsite at the Corporate Office in Homebush West, the Senior Legal Counsel is a key member of the legal team, providing strategic and commercially focused legal advice to ASX listed company Harvey Norman Holdings Limited, and each subsidiary (the Company).
You will play a lead role in managing complex legal matters, significant commercial transactions and strategic projects, while proactively identifying and mitigating legal and regulatory risk. As a trusted adviser to senior stakeholders, you will deliver practical, commercially focused legal solutions that support business objectives, mentor junior lawyers and manage external legal advisers where required.
You will regularly work with senior management and executive stakeholders across a broad range of complex commercial, governance and regulatory matters, including but not limited to:
- Information Technology (Master Services Agreements, software licensing, IT projects and technology governance)
- Sponsorships and promotional activities
- Commercial supply and procurement arrangements
- AML/CTF, gift card and finance-related activities
- Intellectual property, including trademark portfolio management, licensing and domain names
- Privacy and data governance
- Corporate governance and regulatory compliance
About You
You are an experienced commercial lawyer with a strong track record of advising senior stakeholders on complex legal, regulatory and governance matters within a large corporate environment. Combining sound legal expertise with strong commercial judgement, you can confidently navigate risk, influence decision-making and deliver practical solutions aligned to business objectives. You are a trusted adviser and collaborative leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about mentoring others and driving best practice across the legal function
We’re looking for someone eager to make a meaningful impact within Harvey Norman’s Legal team. Bring your drive, work hard, and be rewarded with real career development opportunities.
You will also bring:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree (or equivalent), admission as an Australian Lawyer and a current unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate.
- 5-10+ years' post-qualification experience gained in-house and/or within a leading private practice firm.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex commercial, regulatory, governance and dispute matters.
- Strong knowledge of Australian Consumer Law, the Corporations Act, intellectual property, privacy, competition and consumer law, franchising, consumer credit, workplace health and safety, and technology-related legal matters.
- Expertise in legal risk management, compliance and corporate governance.
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to advise and influence executive leadership.
- Strong negotiation, dispute resolution and commercial drafting capabilities.
- Proven leadership experience, including mentoring and developing junior lawyers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex legal issues.
- A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with the ability to balance legal risk with commercial outcomes.
